Land Rover’s Defender Car 2012 Used In The Range Rover Sport and LR4
Though only sold in limited quantities over a handful of sporadic years in North America, Land Rover’s Defender – a direct descendant of the first 1948 Land Rover – continues to thrive in many markets across the world. Our illustrator has now created what is believed to be an accurate representation of the next generation Land Rover Defender – reportedly codenamed Project Icon – set to be released for the 2012 model year.

Based heavily on the T5 steel platform chassis currently used in the Range Rover Sport and LR4, according to Britain’s Autocar, the Project Icon replacement will be capable of meeting the ever-stricter emissions and safety laws that have spelled doom for the Defender as U.S. laws outlawed the sale of new Defenders beginning in 1997 due to the lack of airbags.

The chassis will allow the next-generation rig to be offered in a multitude of bodystyles, including hard- and soft-top variants and a utilitarian pickup style.

Our illustrations show the likely move towards a slightly longer, slightly more modern design when compared to the original, which remained virtually unchanged for decades.

Expect the LR4′s 195 horsepower 2.7-liter diesel V6, which isn’t currently offered in North America, to be the standard powertrain in the next-generation Defender for global markets. If the model is earmarked for North American consumption, the advanced 5.0-liter V8 developed with Jaguar used in the LR4 and Range Rover Sport seems like a match made in heaven.

2012 Ford Explorer: Car Seat Check

12Explorer_CS1
The popular Ford Explorer remains mostly the same for 2012. It does get a new four-cylinder EcoBoost engine that delivers V-6 power. On the inside, the crossover’s interior remains unchanged from 2011, with three rows of seats standard. The Explorer can haul seven passengers, but seating drops to six if the standard second-row bench is replaced with two captain’s chairs. We tested a seven-seat Explorer. Find out how the 2012 Explorer performed in Cars.com’s $37,000 SUV Shootout.

For the Car Seat Check, we use a Graco SnugRide 30 rear-facing infant-safety seat, a Britax Roundabout convertible child-safety seat and Graco high-back TurboBooster seat. The front seats are adjusted to a comfortable position for a 6-foot driver and a 5-foot-8 passenger. The three child seats are installed in the second row. The booster seat sits behind the driver’s seat, and the infant seat and convertible seats are installed behind the passenger seat. We also install the infant seat in the second row's middle seat with the booster and convertible in the outboard seats to see if three car seats will fit. If there’s a third row, we install the booster seat and a forward-facing convertible.

Here’s how the 2012 Explorer did in our Cars.com Family Car Seat Check:

Latch system: There are three sets of lower Latch anchors in the Explorer, with two sets in the second row’s outboard seats. The third set is in the third row. The anchors in both rows are easy to use, but we did run into problems with the second row’s inboard anchor on the passenger side that’s obstructed by plastic plates in the seat cushions.

The Explorer has three easy-to-use tethers at the base of the second row’s seatbacks that are easy to use. In the third row, the tether anchor is found on the passenger-side seatback.

Booster seat: In both rows, the booster seat fits well. In the second row, the seat belt buckle behind the driver’s seat is floppy, which could be difficult for a child to use independently. The second row’s other buckles sit on stable bases. In the third row, the buckles also are on fixed bases that will be easy for kids to use. However, the third row doesn’t have a lot of legroom, which could be problematic for taller kids in boosters.

Convertible seat: Our forward-facing convertible fit well in the second and third rows. To fit the rear-facing convertible in the second row, we had to move the front passenger seat forward an inch or two. The second-row seats don’t move forward or back, but they do recline. This left the front passenger with enough legroom, but he or she might get uncomfortable on longer trips.

Infant-safety seat: This rear-facing car seat fits well in the second row, with no need to move the front passenger seat forward.

How many car seats fit in the second row? Two

How many car seats fit in third row? Two

Editor's note: For three car seats — infant-safety seat, convertible and booster seats — to fit in a car, our criterion is that a child sitting in the booster seat must be able to reach the seat belt buckle. Parents should also remember that they can use the Latch system or a seat belt to install a car seat.

The 2012 Honda CR-V, originally set to hit the market in December, faces a delay as massive flooding in Thailand hampers Honda suppliers and disrupts auto production.
"The December on-sale date of the 2012 Honda CR-V could potentially be delayed by several weeks," said American Honda Motor Co. in a statement on its corporate Web site. "The on-sale date will be announced in the near future."
The automaker said "a few critical electronic parts are sourced from Thailand and other regions of the world" in explaining the impact on the CR-V's debut.
It is the second time this year that a natural disaster in Asia has affected vehicle production in North America. Global auto production took a major hit last spring following the massive earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster in Japan.
The flooding in Thailand has been described as a "slow-motion tsunami," as monsoon rains deluged about one-third of Thailand provinces in the past three months, causing the worst flooding in 50 years.
Honda on Monday also announced "adjustments" at its six North American plants due to the flooding, saying auto production will be at approximately 50 percent of the original plan through November 10. Honda said it would not build cars on November 11 as part of the slowdown.
The redesigned CR-V will debut on November 16 at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show. Pricing has not yet been announced.
Inside Line says: You'll wait a little longer for the 2012 Honda CR-V because of yet-another natural disaster in Asia.

genesis

The 2012 Hyundai Genesis is one of the most feared cars in the auto industry. For a base price of $34,000 you get all of the luxury that once was the sole domain of carcompanies like Lexus and Mercedes-Benz.
You also get a 333 HP engine that pulls like a steam locomotive.
You also get all of the features usually associated with luxury cars including lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, heated and cooled driver's seat, as well as heated passenger and rear seats.
You also get soft leather over almost every surface with traditional French stitching.
Roman Mica, contributing editor to TheWeeklyDriver.com and publisher of the The Fast Lane Car, www.tflcar.com, shares his opinion about the impressive 2012 Hyundai Genesis in his video review.
